Brick by Brick: Dismantling Systems of Racialized Oppression
3.5 hour workshop
According to the Ontario Human Rights Commission, “Racism often manifests in negative beliefs, assumptions and actions. However, it is not just perpetuated by individuals. It may be evident in organizational or institutional structures and programs…”. The pervasive nature of racism is reinforced by the systems and structures that support it, much like the mortar and bricks that hold a building in place.
Brick by brick, the systems of racialized oppression can be dismantled and re-structured in a way that reflects greater degrees of racial inclusion. This workshop will take managers through a process of assessing degrees of racial equity within their teams, organizations and practices by applying anti-racism principles to systemic functions including recruitment and hiring, decision-making, resource allocation, and policy review and development.

Unpacking the Knapsack of Privilege and Oppression

What is the importance of upholding the values of equity and inclusion in the workplace? Without making conscious efforts towards these goals employers may, unwittingly, be creating oppressive environments that are unwelcoming to others. Few are comfortable talking about oppression, discrimination and its impacts in employment contexts, however, there are ways to engage in meaningful and authentic anti-oppressive relationships, and progress towards greater degrees of equity in the workplace.
This interactive workshop is for supervisors and managers committed to creating equity, harmonious relationships, trust and safety within intercultural work teams. Through video, self-reflection, roleplay and interactive small and large group exercises, participants will:

We all know how hard it is to recruit PSWs, which makes it all the more important to support new employees in their first few months on the job. This workshop focusses on approaches to effectively help new workers transition to their role and provides strategies to build their confidence and satisfaction. We’ll cover effective orientation techniques, the role of precepting/shadowing and the role redirection plays in keeping the people you want to keep!
This workshop will help you identify:

We’ll discuss the role PSWs can play in support delivery planning and how you can incorporate both ability and approach in performance reviews.

This workshop will introduce the concept of a preceptor training program as a way to provide PSWs with the essential skills for the role, including giving feedback, redirection, recognition of ability development as well as the communication skills to share with you clear assessment and recommendations. You’ll come away with a format for effective preceptor training and some resources.
