We know that quality improvement is a key priority of the government. In the future, our sector will be asked to uphold the principles of the Excellent Care for All Act, similar to many of our health system partners. LHINs are already placing more focus on quality outcomes and some are requiring community organizations to develop Quality Plans. Are your board and senior staff engaged in your quality agenda? Are you struggling to decide how to focus your leadership efforts and support quality improvement in your agency?
Building on the success of OCSA’s Quality Advantage program, we have developed a completely customized joint-board QI retreat for Home and Community Support providers. Limited to four boards and their senior leadership teams, this highly interactive day includes governance training as well as dedicated time for each board to develop plans to improve its governance effectiveness.
Your retreat leaders are Michael Pugh (co-author of the High-Impact Leadership white paper and the keynote speaker at OCSA’s 2014 Quality Improvement conference) and Paula Blackstien-Hirsch (improvement expert and OCSA’s Quality Advantage lead trainer). Tailored especially for Home and Community Support providers, you’ll learn basic governance practices as well as specific governance roles and responsibilities for setting priorities and overseeing the quality of services provided to clients. Your board/staff team will also have dedicated one-on-one time to consult with Michael and Paula. Prior to the retreat, you'll have the opportunity to submit key organizational documents in advance (i.e. strategic plan, scorecards or indicator reports, recent board agendas) in order for Michael and Paula to customize their coaching over the course of the day. No previous Quality Improvement knowledge or experience is required.

About your workshop leaders
Michael Pugh is a nationally known advisor and consultant to health care providers, trade associations, technology companies and government organizations. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Colorado Denver Business School Health Administration Program and in the Health Care Leadership Program for Mt. Sinai Medical School, New York. Michael is also a Senior Faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), currently serving as the Vice Chair of the Leadership Faculty. Michael is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and is a co-author of the IHI published and highly popular white paper, “Seven Leadership Leverage Points for Organization-Level Improvement in Healthcare” and co-author of the recently published IHI white paper “High Impact Leadership: Improve Care, Improve the Health of Populations, and Reduce Costs.”
With over 30 years of experience in healthcare, Paula Blackstien-Hirsch has led system level improvement initiatives provincially and nationally in the hospital and community-based sectors. Paula was formerly Executive Director for the Centre for Healthcare Quality Improvement, Senior Director with the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, Manager of Applied Research Projects at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, and is on Faculty at the University of Toronto, teaching in several programs focused on Quality Improvement. She developed and led the Executive Sponsor workshop for the Ministry of Health-sponsored IDEAS Program and has coached many Boards/Senior Executives on leadership strategies for improving organizational quality of client service delivery. For the past year, Paula has led OCSA’s Quality Advantage project.
