An Introduction to Nutritional Need Changes in Later Life
3-hour workshop

This session will discuss age related changes in nutritional needs. Both changes in nutrients and caloric intake will be discussed, as will the role of lifelong preferences in dietary practices. The session will also focus on simple techniques the support worker may use to support positive client’s nutrition without major changes in the client’s diet.

This in-service workshop will help your staff:
  • Identify age related changes in nutritional needs (both metabolic and sensory) that may affect a client’s nutritional needs and intake
  • Discuss these changes in light of a client’s lifelong dietary preferences.
  • Discuss simple techniques a support worker may use to enhance nutrition without major changes in a client’s diet.

Special Diets and Dietary Considerations
3-hour workshop

This session will provide an overview of common special diets and dietary restrictions. Myths and facts with regard to each will be covered. Impacts on ingredients, preparation and storage will be discussed, as applicable to the diet.

This in-service workshop will help your staff:
  • Identify what is actually meant by a special diet/dietary restrictions
  • Identify and discuss characteristics of common special diets
  • Describe tips for preparing special diets (ingredients, preparation, handling and storage

Making Meals More Inviting
3-hour workshop

This session covers common social, functional and physical reasons for poor eating among clients. For each, participants will learn responses that support appropriate intake.

This in-service workshop will help your staff:
  • Identify potential reasons (social, functional and/or physical) impacting client eating
  • Identify actions they can take to addresses issues
  • Differentiate among those that may require supervisor or other intervention.

The PSW’s Role in Assisting the Client with Swallowing Disorders
3-hour workshop

This session discusses the most common causes, signs, symptoms and risks of swallowing disorders the support worker may encounter. Techniques to respond to common issues will be discussed, as will those that require professional assessment and intervention.

This in-service workshop will help your staff:
  • Identify the risks associated with swallowing disorders
  • Discuss principles that guide support to the person with a swallowing disorder
  • Identify and discuss interventions appropriate for the PSW to make, and why these interventions are appropriate
  • Identify interventions that require professional assessment and response and discuss the reason that professional intervention is required
