Where Are You Really From?
3-hour workshop
“Where are you from?” contains both a question and a statement. The question conveys curiosity and interest in getting to know others. However, also contained in this question is a message based on assumptions about difference. These assumptions may be grounded in implicit bias, stereotyping and discriminatory attitudes which are unwelcoming to people with marginalized identities and can cause social isolation.
This workshop will help PSWs interact in inclusive ways with diverse clients and co-workers, including newcomers, refugees, racialized persons and persons of colour. Through self-reflection, video, role play and discussion, workshop participants will:

- define and distinguish between stereotypes, prejudices and implicit biases
- consider aspects of their own identities in relation to clients and team members
- identify the impacts of microaggressions on the individual and the team
- practice skills for responding to microaggressions and other exclusionary behaviours
Intercultural Communication

We live, and work, in a multicultural setting. Unfortunately, differences among us may lead to miscommunication and conflict. This interactive workshop encourages reflection about our experiences as members of diverse communities and workplaces and to help develop inclusive attitudes. Participants learn to appreciate what others bring to the table, while identifying ways to understand and meet mutual needs to attain a win-win outcome. Participants have the opportunity to practice skills, identify and overcome challenges through self-reflection, simulations, small group exercises and large group discussion.
